WEEKLY TASKS FOR THIS CLASS....
These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.
First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK THREE BLOG ENTRY
2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
For example, you are on your first date and the Katy Perry song Dark Horse plays on the radio three separate times during the evening. So now whenever you think of the date, you are reminded of the song, and vice versa.
1. What is the greatest single song of all time and why?
ReplyDeleteIn society today there are different types of genre of music. It is hard to choose from all the music there is out there. Though I believe that there is a single song that is the greatest! This song comes from one of my favorite group. This group was very talented and had songs that caught my attention. This song is called “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations. The reason why I love this song is because it speaks of how this guy is so lucky for having a girl like her. Also how this guy will soon marry her, have a home, and raise a family. He thinks it’s just a dream, but it seems too real. This is every girls dream to find a wonderful man that has the same plans. It is such a great song, it will forever be one of my ultimate favorites.
2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
There are many songs that links directly to too many of my memories. One song that comes right off my head is a song called “I hate this part” by the Pussycat Dolls. This song is just an amazing song as well. This song my four cousins and I would always sing it every time we would see each other. This song had come out when we were about 11 or 12 years old. We later called it “our song” because it reminded us of each other. We all had a different part of the song that each of us would sing. This song pretty much explains our childhood boy crushes, heart breaks, and friendships.
I enjoyed reading your post. I love that you and your cousins assigned and sung different parts of the song. If I had cousins my age, I would love to do something like that with them. =]
DeleteI love "Just My Imagination"! Artists just don't make songs like that anymore. I wish people wrote more romantic songs like they did before. And it's so cute that you share a memory like that with your cousins. I remember when that song came out too. My cousins and I made a dance to it. We thought we were so cool. :)
DeleteI love oldies. I know why you chose "just my imagination" its a great song. Old music is amazing, I could listen to it all day.
DeleteShelby, thank you! (;
DeleteYes, I was always lucky to have a close connection with them but now that we're older and off to college we all got separated. :/
So maybe this memory can follow them like it did to me.
Eleni, yes! I wish they did too. I love the Temptations! Its like one of my ultimate favorite bands. Their songs made me want to sing along to all of them! Haha, yeah we thought we were so cool too, showing off to our family thinking we were the best !lol
DeleteI really enjoy that song. Reminds me of growing up and my mom would always put on the oldie station when I was in the car with her. that song also reminds me of watching the movie The Temptations when the band member who was in the wheelchair died and this song came on. Very touching scene in an awesome movie.
DeleteI hope whenever all of you meet up, it's like no time has gone by. =]
DeleteThe temptations are amazing! I watched the movie that was made about them and it was pretty darn good. I wish music was made like this again. Music that actually had a meaning behind it. Thanks for sharing Claudia!(:
DeleteHi Claudia!
DeleteI remember those kind of songs I used to sing with my friends! Those were the stress free days! I agree with you that every woman needs a man that has those plans in mind!
Picking a single best song of all time makes me feel like Sophie in the movie, Sophie's choice. I love all music, and I don't think I'd be happy if I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life. However, if I'm going to pick a song, I will pick one that I know will always be apart of my life. It would be Stop in the name of love by The Supremes. I love this song, because of my memories associated with it. The best times of my childhood are whenever my grandma would play the Supremes in the car and we would sing along with it. My grandmother was a very unhappy and bitter woman, but she was a good person at heart. Whenever these songs would come on, we would sing them together, and for those few minutes, her spirit came to life and she radiated happiness. She seemed whole again, and grateful to be alive. I feel like I am who I am today, because of what she taught me about life. To this day I feel like she gave me the best piece of advice that I will ever hear. She told me to just always stay true to my character, and continue to care for others. Whenever I hear the Supremes, especially that song, I feel like she is visiting me, and reminding me of her advice. I hope in the future that I can pass down all of my music to the future generations of my family.
ReplyDeleteHi Shelby! Your post was really great. I'm so glad that you had something that you could share with your grandmother. It's crazy how music can help us be so happy in a time when we're so sad, even if it's just for a few minutes. I guess this happens because it does exactly what you explained, which is remind us of happy times.
DeleteAww, that's sweet. It's really cool you have those memories with you grandmother, I wish I had that. It's nice that now when you listen to the song you'll always know that she's there with you.
DeleteAwwe Shelby that is so cute! Having a song that reminds you of your grandma can be the best. I wish I had that same connection with my grandmothers. Sadly, one of my grandmothers have passed away when I was about 11 years old. She lived in Mexico, but i felt like I knew her like the palm of my hand. Though my other grandmother, I'm not quite to close to her. Funny that we live in the same city and we hardly speak. Sad to say I have few memories with her. That's why i admire your relationship with your grandma. (;
DeleteEleni Murillo: I agree music can be very powerful.
DeleteClaudia Mora: Thank you. =] I was very fortunate to be close to her, when she was alive.
Ashlynne Pittman, Claudia Mora, and Eleni Murillo: Thank you for your kind words. <3
This was a really sweet story. She left a cool legacy in a really simple way. I have a similar thing about my great grandma who was a bitter woman, but always dressed super fancy all the time. She would take me to get our nails done when I was little and she always got hers painted purple because she said it was the color of royals. So now every time I see purple nail polish I think of her.
DeleteWhen it comes to music there are so many different genres. Human beings are all individual and different, so it only makes sense for there to be so many different sounds to cater to each liking. Personally, I really enjoy most styles of music, however, if I had to choose one I would pick vocal jazz. This genre includes artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra. It’s hard for me to pick an all-time favorite song, so I’ve narrowed it down to my top three favorite songs. One song is “La Vie En Rose” by Louis Armstrong. I love the strong instruments in this song accompanied by Armstrong’s raspy deep voice. Another one of my favorites is “I’ll Be Seeing You” by Billie Holiday. I just love the sound of this song because you can hear it doesn’t sound too perfect. The recording of it sounds a bit raspy in the background. Every time I hear this perfect imperfection I feel as if it almost adds texture to the song. Also Billie Holiday in general had such a unique voice; she made her music sound like a lullaby that was telling a story. Lastly, I love the song “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller. Now this song has no words, but it says so much. The melody is so smooth and relaxing, yet you can still manage to hear the soft imperfect crispy noise of the static in the background. Every time I hear it I think all of the different couple’s overtime that may have made memories and danced to this song. In fact, when I hear all of these songs I think of how many people have lived their lives to these soundtracks. I think that’s why I enjoy them so much. They contain so much history that most of us will never know. As for a song that is directly linked to a memory I think of “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire. Every time I listen to this song it reminds me of family and great times. From every birthday party to every Christmas, this song always manages to get my family up dancing and having a great time.
ReplyDeleteSeptember by Earth, Wind, &Fire is an awesome song. I remember singing it for choir and we all had such a great time singing it along with making memories.
DeleteEvery time I hear "Ill be seeing you" by Billie Holiday I definitely think of the Notebook. Super girlish of me haha. You have really good taste in music.
DeletePicking one single song to be my favorite would be really difficult. I love all different kinds of music because it all speaks to me in a different way. Like on my Pandora station it will usually be on Art Laboe Radio, Frank Ocean Radio or country hits. I absolutely love, love songs. I know what a typical girl. Anyhow, one of my favorite songs would have to be “I Do (Cherish You)” by Mark Wills. One day this song may be my wedding song. Every time I listen to it I get the chills. The song talks about this man who will always and forever love this woman and he just wants to let her know how much she means to him. I have several favorite songs but there are only select songs that I never get tired of.
ReplyDeleteThere are quite a few songs that I listen to that make me reminisce about certain memories. One song in particular would be “I’m Your Puppet” by James and Bobby Purify. My boyfriend sang this song to me over the phone when we were sophomores in high school. I was only 15 years old and we are still together, we have been together for going on 6 years. While he was singing this song, I remember I was sitting on my bed and doing my math homework. It was a silly moment at the time, but honestly now every time I hear that song I can’t help but think how young we were when we first started dating.
Ashlynne, I totally agree with you about how music can speak to us in different ways. There are so many songs that can describe my life, relationships, friendships, and family situations. Now in days, I believe that there is music that doesn't even make sense now. What are songs saying? "About how girls are this and that"? But yes, Art Laboe Radio is amazing!
DeleteI remember listening to Art Laboe Radio when I was a little kid. My older cousin used to have all the Art Laboe volumes on cd's as well. I actually haven't heard the name Art Laboe in a very long time. I might even go on Ebay and Amazon now to look for those old cd's.
DeleteI've noticed that as the new generations come along, they are more open to different genres. I'm really glad this is the case. I think it makes us better people when we listen to people from different walks of life.
DeleteAshlynne!!!
DeleteThat's so sweet that your boyfriend dedicated that song to you! I also grew up hearing the Art Laboe Radio. One time I even called the radio station to dedicate a song to my boyfriend. I dedicated him the song "Always and Forever" by Heat wave. It's kind of silly but we are still together which makes me really happy that I have memories like that! Well anyways, I enjoyed reading your blog! (: Great choice of music!!
I love Art Laboe! I grew up listening to him whether it was oldies, slow jams, or R&B. I don't know if your familiar with Your a Big Girl Now by The Stylistics, but it happens to be my father/daughter dance song at my wedding this upcoming year because that has always been the song my dad dedicated to me.
DeleteBernie- I love hat kind of music and you can find a lot of really nice songs.
DeleteShelby-I agree, I mean don't get me wrong I like new music too, I really listen to everything. However I think its important that we appreciate all kinds of music.
Kimberly- I know ha, he didn't want me to write about it on here either. Aww, thats cute!
Alyssa- Ohhh how awesome! I thought i recognized the song so I went on youtube to listen to it, ha I do remember it. Thats so cool!
I listen to all types of music but if I had to choose a certain genre I would say Spanish and to narrow it down even more I would have to say that Mariachi is my favorite type of music. The one song that I would have to say is probably my favorite song of all time would have to be En el Ultimo Trago by Jose Alfredo Jimenez. This song has a lot of meaning to me because of my grandfather. This song was released when he was an early teen and he has told me that when he would go to all the different bars in Culiacan and later on in his life in Mexicali he would always request this song to be played by the group that was playing that song. He once told me a story that when he was in his early 20's he had a friend quite a few years older than him who had lost his wife to an illness. Every time this man would get drunk he would ask my grandfather to take him to her grave to sing her this song. To this day every time my grandpa tells me this story I hear his voice cracking as if he himself wants to cry thinking about this older man who has died years ago himself. Jose Jimenez sings in this song that he is in a bar drinking a bottle of liquor trying to forget that his wife is going to leave him because he is an alcoholic but he is not going to argue with her because he knows that she has given him plenty of chances and he has not been able to clean up his act. No matter how old he gets he keeps making the same mistakes so he is just going to toast for her to have a good future without him. This is a very powerful song for any one who understands and appreciates older Spanish music. I request it every time I go to a bar or restaurant and there is a Spanish group playing now like my grandpa did so many years ago.
ReplyDeleteHi Bernie!
DeleteWhile I was taking several Spanish classes in high school, my Spanish teacher would play some Mariachi music during class and it was so nice to listen to and be able to listen to songs from other cultures. The Spanish culture is so dynamic and amazing!
Hey Bernie, It is good to know that there are still people like you that keep the meaningful traditions. Good for you, and keep listening to José Alfredo Jiménez he has great songs.
DeleteThe greatest single song of all time is “I was here” by Beyoncé. I choice this song because of how inspiring and motivating her lyrics are. For example, the song talks about leaving this world with no regrets because you have accomplished all your dreams. It also talks about leaving a special mark of yourself in this world that will remind people you existed. I feel like everyone can relate to this song especially future teachers. As teachers, we strive to become a mentor that can change a student’s life for the better. We want to make a difference in their life and help them in any way we can. This song is a reminder to people that they were brought into this world to mark their existence either by making a positive difference in the world or by simply loving someone that will never forget their presence. The song also reminds people that they should live their life to the fullest because no one ever knows when their time will be up.
ReplyDeleteA song that reminds me of a special memory is “Foolish” by Ashanti. This song reminds me of her concert that she just had in Bakersfield at the Kern County Fair. My boyfriend and I had the opportunity to go see her and it was a dream come true. I’ve also wanted to attend one of her concerts so when I heard that she was coming to Bakersfield I couldn’t miss it. I’ve been listening to her songs since I was about 13 years old. The only reason why I started listening to her songs was because of my older sister. She would always be hearing her songs and since, we were so close to each other I ended up liking her music. When I hear any song by Ashanti, I think of my childhood with my sister. We would always karaoke her songs. It was like a competition to see who sang her songs better and of course, I did. Now, every time I hear her music I think of my childhood with my sister, and I think about the fabulous performance that Ashanti gave at the fair.
I also think "i was here" by Beyonce is a really great song. I usually love all of her music but that song has a really good message behind it. I love Ashanti! I wish i was able to have seen her at the fair but i couldn't. Every time I hear her songs it also takes me back to my child hood. Great choice! (:
DeleteI enjoyed how you described the song. Makes me want to go listen to it. I don' know if I have ever heard it. Oh man, LUCKY. I wanted to go to the concert but I had to work as usual.
DeleteHaving to pick a single song is really though reason being that i love music and I'm opened to almost every genre of it. My Pandora ranges anything from Classical to R&B to Country. My artists range anything from Demi Lovato to Kendrick Lamar to Sam Smith, however i like artists like these who actually have a message behind every song. I say this because all this new music that is coming out today in my opinion is a bunch of junk. Songs that i believe degrade women and speak about abusing drugs and alcohol, songs that don't even make sense. But then theres the good music, songs that actually speak to you and you can relate to. Songs that can describe the situation you're currently in, relationships and etc. That being said one of my all time favorite songs is I Wont Give Up by Jason Mraz from his album Love is a Four Letter Word. I love this song because Mraz is saying that although things may be going downhill for him in his relationship he will always be there for her and he wont give up even on the worst days. Mraz basically says to not give up on the one you love. I find this song very emotional, inspiring and beautiful. Mraz is a very talented man who has an amazing voice and has great guitar playing skills. The melody of this song is so soothing to me therefore I often play it on long car drives. I have a couple of good and funny memories with this song but the funniest one is one summer night 2 years ago sitting in the car with my cousin singing at the top of our lungs because we had both gone through a heartbreak. To this day we both still think back to it and laugh about it.
ReplyDeleteHello Yesenia,
DeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog post. I also love music that has a message behind them i feel like that is what makes them more genuine. Jason Mraz is just the best!
Hi Yesenia, I also agree that the music industry, in almost every genre, has gone way down hill with what they're putting out. Like you said, it's mostly about drinking, drugs, and abusing women. Which genre do you believe puts out the most trash in regards to drugs, alcohol, and women abuse, because country is even guilty of this.
DeleteHey Crystal,
DeleteThank you! But yeah definitely think music should have a meaning behind it or it is not art and yes he is i enjoy listening to his music!
Hey Nick, thank you for agreeing but yeah it sure has. I think the genre that exposes these things the most is rap/hip hop.
DeleteCertain songs come on the radio that remind me of trips I’ve taken and with whom I took them. For example, when Flo Rida’s song “Good Feeling” comes on, it reminds me of the Halloween trip a couple friends and I took to San Luis Obispo dressed up as Seal Team 6 and partied. Before I was old enough to drink, the one song that stood out to me was a song that played when I was on a fishing trip with my dad. Every summer, my family and I would take a fishing trip to Bishop, and the one song I would always play while I was staring out of the back window of my mom’s Suburban was Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” This song was played over and over on almost every fishing trip I went on when I was younger and even on some of the fishing trips I go on today. The song stands out to me the most because my dad was born and raised on a ranch, and all four of his sisters and one older brother all own ranches today. Although my dad doesn’t own a ranch, his younger cowboy days were spent outdoors, which is what he wanted for his sons. He made sure my three brothers and I all grew up outside and loved the great outdoors, fishing and hunting, just like he did. With my dad’s cowboy background, my brothers and I all wanted to be like him, which is why the song “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” is true for my dad and his sons, all except for the cowboy hats, because we don’t do cowboy hats.
ReplyDeleteAhh man that trip to SLO must have been awesome!!! "Good Feeling" always takes me back a few years as well.
DeleteIt's one of those songs you never forget, that's for sure.
DeleteGooding Feeling by Florida is definitely a good song to get you hyped and it is super catchy! I remember when Florida was still unheard of and he came out with this song
DeleteHi Yesenia. I was actually hoping Flo Rida would stay unheard of because the radio has a way of ruining songs for me.
DeleteThat is the BEST place for Halloween festivities. I bet it was awesome. That's really cool that your dad raised you guys to love the outdoors and that you come from a ranching family. Toby Keith is in my opinion the most talented in singing about beer and bar fights, which makes me want to be best friends with him.
DeleteHi Savannah, San Luis Obispo is indeed the best place for Halloween festivities. Toby Keith isn't one of my favorite country artists but he does do a good job on songs about drinking.
Delete1. What is the greatest single song of all time and why?
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick a single song it would have to be "Beautiful People" by Chris Brown. I think it's the greatest because the song's message is about people being beautiful regardless of who they are or where they are from. This song was a shock to me when I first listened to it because it's out of the artist's character. I also think it's the greatest not only because of the lyrics but the music as well. Every time the song comes on I can't help but cranking up the volume to it's maximum potential and jam out! It's has this electro sound to it.
2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
I have a memory directly linked to "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson. I was in high school still and my friend Louis, Brett, and I were in the middle of these big orchards. My friend Brett was the the driver and Louis and I were the passengers. We were young and reckless; therefore, we were listening to "Billie Jean" when my friend Brett decides to do donuts in the car. The night did not end well as we totaled the car by hitting a fence. Thankfully everyone was alright, but the memory still remains and that song is directly linked to the memory.
This is probably the hardest topic for me to answer. Of course I love all types of music genres but choosing one song is really hard. When I find a song that I am obsessed with I usually burn it out by playing it 24/7. I’ve tried to stop doing that but it gets really hard not to play it all the time until it’s too much for me. That being said, the one song that I keep going back too and in my opinion is the single greatest song of all time is “babygirl” by Anthony Green. This song is attached to so much great memories in my life. For this reason this song is more of a personal favorite that I hold dear to my heart. Of course I believe that there is so much other great music or songs out there but this song just has a lot of sentimental value to me so for me it’s the best song. Listening to this song makes me feel as if I’m stepping into a time machine and going back in time where these memories took place. It’s amazing how music makes people feel. Great music speaks to people. Another song that is really inspiring to me is “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. I was watching a documentary where a mother put out a short video of her daughter struggling with something personal and basically it was her mom wanting for her to live her life how she wanted. The song fit perfectly and now every time I hear that song I think about the documentary. I’m sure this song gives a lot of people confidence to live their life however they want and to be brave about it.
ReplyDeleteHello Crystal!!!!
DeleteI enjoyed reading your blog! I also love the song "Brave" by Sara Bareilles!! I would always here it on the radio but what made me like it the most was that it was sang by my favorite singer Lea Michele in Glee. I agree that it is a really good inspiring song that encourages you to be brave. This is one of the reasons why I love this song! (: Great choice of music!!!
Hi Crystal, if you don't mind me asking, what memories do the songs bring you back to the most? Mine was a memory in my childhood that I somehow seem to be able to recall like it happened yesterday.
DeleteKimberly, yay! I'm glad someone also loves that song as much as me. I love Lea Michele she''s an awesome actor.
DeleteNick, Mine just takes me back to high school days like taking road trips with friends and family. Every time I hear that song it just takes me back to those fun memories.
You folks are really good at writing about music...
ReplyDeleteThank you Dr. Schmoll. (:
Delete1. What is the greatest single song of all time and why?
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say I enjoy listening to all types of genres such as oldies, pop, R&B, rap, rock, and I love country music. Any song from Keith Sweat or R. Kelly is my favorite. I grew up in the early 90's and both of my parents worked full time, so one of my older cousins would take care of me and she would have R. Kelly playing or Keith Sweat. Any time I hear either artist it takes me down memory lane and how much fun I had when she took care of me.
2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
Every time I hear She's Everything by Brad Paisley it reminds me of my fiance. Back when we were 16 he sang this over the phone to me and at the time we were only dating maybe two weeks. He would talk about our future and I thought he was crazy because how can you determine all that in just a month an a half of knowing someone, but almost six years later he was right, we are everything to each other.
Hi Alyssa!
DeleteYou are the opposite of me because I am more into new music and not old music lol. I am also more into new movies than old movies because I am more of a modern person. It is interesting to know someone like you who enjoys the oldies and some 90's songs! That is cute how a certain song remainds you of your fiance! Good luck to both of you in your future!
Oh I love Brad Paisley and she's everything is one of my favorite songs.
DeleteJessica- I'm 21 going on 22, but an old soul at heart. Thank you for your kind words!
DeleteJimmy- I agree, Brad Paisley is a wonderful artist.
Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteI listen to all types of music and because I commute everyday to school, the radio is what entertains me on my one-hour drive. This is my fourth year of commuting and throughout those years, I have listened to different songs that were popular throughout the different months and seasons. The greatest song of all time which happens to be my ringtone is the song “See you again,” by the artist Wiz Khalifa and another featured artist Charlie Puth. This song came out recently about seven months ago. The first time I listened to it was this past summer and I fell in love. This is the greatest song ever because it does not fail to explain my relationship with some people in my life who have helped me grow, succeed, and be happy all the time. I love it when this song comes on the radio because each time it brings out a happy memory in my life.
One of my memories that is directly linked to a song is my high school graduation when I listen to the song “I believe I can fly,” by the artist R.Kelly. This song was played at my high school graduation and each time I listen to it, it reminds me of my high school graduation. This song brings back the memories of high school such as lockers, high school friends, unappetizing cafeteria food, and many memories. This song will always hold a special place in my heart because it reminds of my accomplishments and happy times with friends.
The best songs are the ones that make you reflect on life and past adventures. I have heard the songs you are talking about and there good ones.
DeleteHi Andres!
DeleteYes! I agree with you! Songs are amazing in the way they take us back to a certain memory.
Nice I do the same I listen to basically everything when I drive to school I am not that that picky when it comes to music in general
Delete"I believe I can fly" reminds me of Space Jam!! Every time I hear it I immediately am reminded of Michael Jordan. Weird, I know lol. Graduation songs will forever stay with you and flush you with those great memories.
DeleteThere are just so many different song choices and genres out there it was difficult for me to even think of one. It was especially difficult for me because honestly, I don’t really pay much attention to song titles, but when the song comes on I’ll remember them. If you’re shocked about that, believe me you are not the first. Even with that being said, I believe a lot of the greatest songs came out during the 90s and early 2000s. Although I know this isn’t the number one song I would’ve picked if I remembered song titles, “End of the Road” by Boys II Men would be my song choice of all time. Although the connection behind this song deals with the end of a relationship which is saddening, but to me, I also find it enlightening. It’s saddening because it does talk about two people separating and brings back the time I graduated high school, and me and my friends knew we wouldn’t be as close as we were during high school. I find it enlightening because when we do hear that song when we’re together, it brings back the bond we all used to share. One song that brings back a day I remember so clearly is “Dance with My Father” by Luther Vandross. It was during the holidays in 2001 where my family was coming home from my relative’s house Christmas evening, and this song played on the radio. That year my grandfather passed away on my birthday, and since he was my mom’s father and my mom was in the car as well, it really touched me. I just really wish he was there to spend the holidays with us. I believe that same year my dad was diagnosed with kidney failure so at the time all I could think about were all the what-ifs of not having my dad around, too. Luckily, although he hasn’t received a kidney donor, he’s still going strong with the help of Dialysis.
ReplyDeleteI haven't listened to boys II men in forever I'm going to have to listen to them again.
DeleteBoys II Men brings back the good old times, at least for me. haha they're music is definitely soulful.
DeleteIt is very difficult for me to choose one song that is my favorite without accounting for all of the songs in the world. I love Copperhead Road by Steve Earle, The 8th of November by Big and Rich and Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis. Each one of them has a really cool story behind them that makes you think. Just based on the interesting story factor these songs are starkly different from today's popular music. I love Three Wooden Crosses because it is about a preacher who was raised by a hooker who influenced his relationship with God by giving him a Bible that another pastor gave her at a car accident. Long story, but has a large impact and reminds you to be humble and that every person has a purpose.
ReplyDeleteI do have specific memories associated with the Kenny Rogers song "The Gambler." When I was a kid my parents would drive all of us five kids out to Las Vegas and my dad would play this song on repeat the whole way because he said it was his preparation for big winnings. Somehow it would work and after playing poker he would always win our family a free room at the casinos. I also really love Kenny Rogers song "Coward of the County" it gives a lot of valuable lessons about life and learning when to pick your battles.
I also have a lot of memories listening to Taylor Swifts first album when I was in high school. It had just come out and she wasn't super famous yet. My friends and I had gone camping in Bishop and played this the whole drive there. It was awesome and I cannot hear one of those songs without thinking of the good times we had together. I always start to compare how we were back then to the people we are now and I am always grateful for the blessing it is to have witnessed it. So essentially some dumb relationship song from 15 year old Taylor Swift has allowed me to reminisce with purpose haha.
Hi Savannah,
DeleteI'm glad you appreciate music that has meaning behind it; most music today is made with minimal effort, and no significant meaning, yet somehow people enjoy it. It is also crazy that one single song can bring up specific memories and make you reminisce.
The single greatest song of all time is a hard question to answer just like what is your favorite movie. It is hard to pin down just one. But if I was forced to choose just one it would be “Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. This is one of the most recognizable songs ever made by one of the greatest artists that has ever lived. This song for me has a lot of nostalgia because this is the song that would start on every road trip that my family ever took. My father would tell me stories every time this song came on how he saw Thorogood live and was one of the best concerts that he has seen live. This song also bring one of my favorite movies to mind “Major Pain.” This song starts the movie and brings a fun and lightness to the movie. A lot of the greatest 80’s and 90’s movies had this song because of its cool yet soft rock element. It does have one of the worst music videos ever made but frankly almost no 80’s music videos were even watchable. This song also features Bo Diddley having a guitar battle. If that is not epic I don’t know what awesome is. This song was amazing in the early 80’s and still holds up against the test of time. Unlike some songs from this time the lyrics and melody are still applicable today. If you want a little something different to listen to in the car download this song and you will not be disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard this song but it sounds like it has a lot of trajectory as it is played in "Major Pain". I think the best songs are the one that have personal meanings.
DeleteI liked the comment you made about this song having a horrible music video- i can agree with you that most 80's videos are either extremely weird, or cheesy.
DeleteGreat song I have heard it various times in different places like movies or venues of different sorts shows that it was a good song
DeleteNatalie right music videos in the 80's, what were they thinking?
DeleteAndres you might be one of the only other people I know that has seen "Major Pain."
DeleteBeing bilingual I am exposed to a number of songs that have multiple meanings. However the greatest song of all time reminds me of my grandparents. The song is called “Amor Eterno” by Rocio Durcal. I don’t know much about the artist only that this song is very meaningful to me in regards to my grandparents. The song basically expresses love, emotions, and the importance of reliance on your partner. Basically “Amor Eterno” translates to eternal love. This song drives me to when I was 10 years old and my grandparents where celebrating their 50th anniversary. I come from a large family with many cousins and uncles; consequently during this time my family decided to organize a large gathering in order to value the wonderful parents/grandparents they still are. This gathering consisted of a mass, family, friends, and mariachi among other things. However, there came a time during the gathering in which each grandchild including myself took roses to my grandparents which summed up to the number of year they have been together (50). When I took the roses I remember my grandparents hugging all of the grandchildren and telling us how much they love us and how great full they are to have the best family. Immediately after this event there was a video exposed to the public in which there were a number of pictures and memories of my grandparents with the theme song “Amor Eterno”. I turned around to look at my grandparents and they were tearing up of joy as they looked back at every moment they have lived together. Therefore every time I hear this song it reminds me of my grandparents and the mutual love they share with themselves and the family.
ReplyDeleteHello Andres,
DeleteI am also bilingual, and I enjoy both English and Spanish music. That song you just commented on is such a beautiful song and the artist is just amazing. She has an amazing voice; I can see why your grandparents decided to play that song on they 50th anniversary.
Hello Andres, it is great that you have this amazing memory on Amor eterno. I agree with you this is a great song, that no matter how many years go by it is still one of the most beautiful love songs.
DeleteHello classmates, the greatest song of all time. It is a very difficult question to answer. Thinking about a good song I remembered, Mi Querido Viejo by Vicente Fernandez. This song always brings me back to the long family trips we took to México growing up. During these trips my father would listen to this song and talked about all the guilt he had for not being there for my grandfather. This song translates to; my dear old dull walk now. As forgiving the wind I am you blood my old, I am you silence and you time he has good eyes and a heavy figure age came upon him without carnival or carnival. I have the new years and man years old the pain inside, and has stories and timeless……… Now that I am older and see my father growing older, I can relate to my fathers feelings. The difference is that I have the blessing to have my father with me. In my opinion, this is a great song to remind us to be grateful, respectful, and most important to love our father.
ReplyDeleteI love the memory that is attached to your song. I think that is so amazing, and it's a feeling many people can relate to.
DeleteThank you for taking the time on reading my post, yes many people can relate to this song especially young adults.
DeleteMusic provokes many emotions;both good and bad. Music speaks to your soul and at times, brings up particular memories. When I saw that I had to pick only one song, I knew it was going to be hard. I listen to pretty much any genre, and within each genre are songs that speak to me on an intimate level. However, of all of them, I must say that “Que no Quede Huella” by Bronco is one of my favorites. This song is not my favorite for its lyrics, but for the memory that arose from listening to it. Every time I hear that song, it instantly puts a smile on my face. It started when my boyfriend and I were barely getting to know each other. At that time, he was a very shy, fun guy who,I thought only listened to rock and hip hop. When we were out on the town doing some errands, out of nowhere, “Que no Quede Huella” comes on. I was surprised by the sudden switch in genres, but I continued listening. As the chorus comes on, he started dancing while driving. He was alternately shrugging his shoulders up and down while having his arms stiff in front of him; It caught me off guard and thought it was so goofy that I just burst into laughter. That was the first time I had ever seen him attempt to dance, and it was everything that I thought it would be. Just the fact that he’s not the best dancer in the world, but tried to get a laugh out of me was what made that little moment so special. And, to this day, when that song comes on, whether I’m with or without him, I can’t help but smile and think about that particular day roughly 2 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see I wasn't the only person who had a hard time picking just ONE song...so I didn't. I think it's so amazing the kinds of memories that are attached to not only sounds but smells as well.
DeleteGrowing up with lots, and lots of music in the house I had to scroll through my iTunes to even get an idea and even a refresher. I definitely got distracted while doing this... While I couldn’t narrow it down to one song, I did narrow it down. Growing up in a big family, I remember being little sitting in the backseat of my aunt and uncles Oldsmobile listening to Motown music. I think one of my favorites is by Earth Wind and Fire called September. There is just something so beautiful and happy about this song. Every time I hear it, it just makes me happy but it also reminds me of my Uncle, who I am very close to and love dearly. That’s probably why I love Earth Wind and Fire, and even just that whole genre of music, is because it reminds me of my uncle and childhood so much.
ReplyDeleteThe other music I can’t help but love is Fleetwood Mac. While my mom wasn’t ever a big fan of Fleetwood Mac, there is just something about their music that I love and reminds me of her so much. I didn’t really get into older music (besides Motown) until I was older, but there is something about Stevie Nicks, that reminds me of my mom. Which isn’t surprising because they’re from the same generation, and born a year apart. The music is bewitching and I enjoy it almost daily.
Hey Terra,
DeleteI totally relate to your whole growing up with lots of music! I remember being woken up by my days massive stereo as he played some of his all time favorite bands. I used to dread that, but now as an adult, I must admit I really do miss those day!
Motown!! =D It reminds me of when I was in choir in high school. Our choir would always practice Motown songs to compete at Disneyland. Speaking of September, I recently sang that song at a family gathering. I agree, that song sure does brighten up my day whenever I hear it.
DeleteHa! I remember the huge stereos also! My mom had one that held 50 CD's and only got rid of it recently. Almost all Earth Wind and Fire songs, are so catchy, I can see why they were picked by your choir, I just love them.
DeleteI always hear the music that my parents put on, which is always slow-downed-romantic-Spanish 70's music. I cannot say that I love it, but I do not mind hearing it. I guess because we can relate our parent's music with our parents themselves and therefore, we can somehow not dislike, even if it is nothing close to our own taste in music.
DeleteMy favorite song of all time that I would say is best day ever by Mac Miller. The reason why I love this song is because I always played it in whatever mood I was in whether I was sad or not. I remember playing the song right before our baseball game in my high school team as a pump up. That song had different meanings since the song is about having a great day overall. Another time I remember playing was the song was when I got my dog and we picked him up and we almost named him Mac, but my parents didn’t like it. I also remember when I bought a lottery ticket and I won $50 when was in my car scratching it and listening to that song, so the point I am getting at is that every time I listen to this song I have good memories. Lately i have noticed its not more about a song its more about a genre specific lately I have been listening to a lot of country so there are many artist I enjoy listening to such as Chris Young and the song Im Coming Over.
ReplyDeleteI definitely love when you play a genre of music, and you can already feel good or that good things are going to happen just because you set the music on. This is exactly me when I study except of listening to country, I listen to House music.
DeleteWhen I read this week's discussion topic on Monday morning, I had a great difficulty figuring out my all time favorite song. It was such a hard decision that decided to come back to it a different day. Here I am a day before this assignment is due, and I have yet to choose a favorite song of mine! I listen to numerous genres, and I enjoy each on equally. However, I always seem to burn out my Latin workout playlist in Pandora during my workout sessions. Anyhow, at this moment I actually have quite a few songs I can listen to all day. However, there is this song I always go back to. It is called "I've Told You Now" by Sam Smith. I am a huge fan of Sam Smith, so much so that I actually purchased his CD album to avoid the hassle of searching for this song thru my phone. I would not say I have a particular memory that makes me fall in love with this song, which is strange because the memories when listening to a song is what usually leads me to enjoy it more. Aside from that, I do enjoy listening to the lyrics. I like that this song does not have to relate to a specific relationship, like a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship. It can relate to various relationships; it is basically communicates an unfinished relationship.
ReplyDeleteYeah, we all have a song that never gets old to us no matter how many years pass by. My favorite song I can never get over is Oblivion by Grimes.

ReplyDeleteI don’t believe that there is such a thing as the greatest song of all time. New music is always being created, and not all of it has been recorded for everyone else to hear. Everyone has different opinions on what makes a song good. Opinions are subjective. However, if it was up to me to choose the greatest song of all time so far, it would be “Swept Away” by The XX. This is my favorite song because it allows me to relax, forget my troubles, and allows me to get lost in the beats and lyrics of the artists. Moreover, the theme of the song is something that everyone can relate to: getting lost with admiration/love for someone.
ReplyDeleteI do not remember the name of the song, but whenever I do hear it, I hit nostalgia hard. When it comes up on the radio, I remember of the times when I was around 6 years old, and I would freely play with my cousins around our neighborhood. We would play tag and hide-and-go-seek. We would at times then run to our nearby elementary school, climb the fence, and play in the playground. We would always eat food from the ice-cream man or go across the street to buy some sweet Mexican bread. When night time would hit, we would beg our parents to buy us pizza and allow us to rent a movie. Both were cheap and again so close by (across the street). Our parents would usually say yes. We ourselves as kids would feel very adult-like for going and picking up the order and choosing our own movie. This song pretty much makes me think of freedom and living without inhibitions.
