WEEKLY TASKS FOR THIS CLASS....
These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week.
First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.
Nature global warming may be a situation that we can and cannot control. As human beings we sometimes forget what can be done to save our earth. Recycling, has been a resource to make this earth a better place, but it isn’t enough. This situation can be a big and small issue around the world. Recycling may be one good thing we can do, but we need more than that we need more awareness towards this situation. We may be half of the reason why I believe global warming has become horrible. We are half of the reason because we are exhausting the earth’s resources. These resources I am referring to is air, water, soil, plants, and more. These are things that we live on and we can’t say no to not using them. The other half of why global warming is horrible is because temperatures never stay the same. We may be killing global warming, but we can’t expect for the past temperatures on the same day today to be the same. Temperatures have become a huge issue around the world due to the impacts it has made many places. Though we all know that temperature is out of our control. This article made me realize many things that never have come to mind. It also made me realize that this can be a life changer to many places around the world. The reason is because the state of California is in need of water, we are in a drought. Other states have a great resource of water, because they have either a great climate or it’s just a normal routine temperature. We all have part of this global warming situation, so we need to be able to find awareness towards it.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is an enormous issue that I don’t believe we pay much attention to today. When reading this article, it made me very sad to think that we’ve let things get this far. We’re destroying our home little by little. Eventually, there will be so little left that the generations to come will have to alter their way of life tremendously in order to survive. Although there is still some time to fix certain issues, it makes me very sad to know that not everyone is on board to try and make a change. We live in a society where some people have extreme tunnel vision. We’re only concerned about ourselves and our needs. We rarely stop to think about what we’re doing or the effects we have on this planet. Most people don’t even know the extreme repercussions that will occur if we continue our current lifestyles. And the really sad part is that we are raising our children to be the same way, whether we know it or not. If we raise our children to believe that taking care of our planet is important, it will be easier for them to carry on good habits throughout their life. Children not only learn if you tell them, but they also learn by seeing. After reading this article it motivates me to be part of the change. I want to be able to help in any way I can. Eventually, maybe somewhere along the way my effort will start a chain reaction. If we all played even a small part in helping our planet, we could change the dark future that awaits us. People have said it over and over again: if you want change, you have to be the change. It can all start with one person.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me really upset. I know that I do not do everything to help with global warming but I do at least try. For those people who think global warming is a hoax and do not do anything to help slow down the process, shame on them. Each and everyday we are destroying our home, the place that one day will be my child's home. It is crazy to think that I want to bring my children into this world knowing that eventually there may be nothing left. If we all continue on the road we are going, there may be nothing left for the future of man kind to thrive on. I know that we can all be sucked in and focused only on ourselves, but I believe that in order for things to take a turn for the better more people need to be willing to make some changes. If everyone at least makes a few changes, and multiply that by trillions of people the overall affect would be significant. Every place around the world is affected by global warming in different ways and for each individual it may effect them differently. I know sometimes we get tied up in our own lives and disregard the bigger picture, but in the end we are going to be living in the bigger picture that we paint for ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThis article was very interesting to read because it gave a lot of dangers that will arise due to global warming. This article is a warning to every one of what we should expect in the future and what we should be cautious of. Of course global warming did not come out of nowhere. I believe that global warming happened because of us human beings. The greenhouse gases that we form from the combustion of fossil fuels in our vehicles are one of the main causes of global warming. We should be afraid of all the concerns mentioned in the article especially the El Nino concern. This year we should be expecting an El Nino which could be good and bad for California. In addition, the article mentions El Nino becoming a more permanent climate fixture which would not be good for us. Another concern that caught my attention is deforestation which leads to higher summer temperatures and a longer dry season which could really affect the Amazon rainforest. Global warming is a serious issue but a lot of people simply ignore it and it is not talked about in the media. The fact that the Arctic’s sea ice melting could trigger other concerns to take place and all of humanity would be in very serious trouble. The article quotes “Added to all that will be the damage that would result from the disruption of an entire ecosystem.” This quote caught my attention because it gives the bad result from global warming. As human beings we should turn our attention to global warming and help to prevent it.
ReplyDeleteThere are many hot topics out there that many pay attention to, but one that many tend to navigate from is Global Warming. Global Warming is such an enormous issue and it is bringing many consequences to planet earth such as sea level rising, droughts, and extreme temperatures. These impacts are definitely effecting human kind today. For example, California who has been declared to be in a drought and the use of water resources are being limited. Water will be scarce, food will be scarce and soon enough human growth will decrease and it'll be like survival of the fittest. This situation is very frightening and very threatening to our future generations. We are literally destroying our homes whether we recognize it or not. However, although Global Warming may not be something that can be stopped from one day to another there are many ways to decrease the rate of the warming. I mean just doing the simplest things can drastically help reduce it. For example, carpooling can be one way since fewer cars on the road would mean less pollution. Another way is to way recycle and reuse. Recycling is definitely eco friendly since we wont have to rely on raw material which means it'll take less energy to make something out of a recycled item. Also, having energy efficient items can do the trick. We have to teach ourselves, others and our children the importance of taking care of our planet. Changing small things in our lifestyles and integrating things like carpooling and recycling can make a difference to save our planet earth.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this article, I could not help but think about how rapidly earth is changing due our irresponsible choices. While I do believe in global warming and understand that it is our causes that are effecting the climate, I never imagined how fast the earth is predicted to change. For some people, the time frame can be far too long for them as they will be unlikely to live that long, it is extremely rapid from a scientific point of view. When looking that this situation in a scientific point of view, it takes millions upon millions of years for the earth to have such rapid changes; therefore, this timeframe of change is rather record breaking. Aside from the time period concerning this dreadful situation, it is far too upsetting to know that that there are still a sufficient number of individuals who do not (or ignore) the reality of this situation. It is as if they feel entitled to do as they please and simply do not feel the urge to help out the environment. They see it as a dread to have to only water their lawns at given days, or recycle plastic. It is quite sad to see that on a daily basis, especially when the chores are fairly simple to follow. It is definitely impossible to drastically improve this situation; however, it is possible to prevent further worsening.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think the Arctic sea ice has a domino effect on the world’s ecological balance if, or when the sea ice melts. First, the melting of the Arctic sea ice causes more water to be exposed to sunlight resulting in warming of the waters. Warming of the water by sunlight, causing El Nino, produced by warm water, to occur more often rather than be just a phenomenon. With the water temperatures rising, so does the summer air temperatures. The warmer summer temperatures threatens the amount of rainfall in the Amazon and also takes a toll on the forests in Canada, Russia, and other parts of the world, causing the forests to slowly dissipate. With little to no forests left, the world’s carbon balance get disrupted causing a crisis for the whole world’s clean oxygen. Ultimately, these disasters can lead to further disasters that could wipe out whole civilizations, for example by creating an Arctic ozone hole. These disasters all seem to be caused by one main event, the melting of the Arctic sea ice. The melting sea ice could quite possibly be reversed if humans, who effect’s this the most, are willing to help stop doing the things damaging our planet before it’s too late. I believe the melting of the Arctic sea ice is somewhat irreversible, but doesn’t need to become a disaster to mankind and can be stopped, but not reversed, to help from further disastrous consequences from happening.
ReplyDeleteI've never had an interest on issues about global warming. Global warming is considered to be the increase in temperature of our Earth and atmosphere. Global warming is one of those issues that are natural disasters that keep happening and are hard to stop. Global warming seems to be affecting us more than we think. After reading this article it made me think about global warming. Now that I have some background information about global warming it should concern each one of us. Throughout the reading I learned that there are many issues regarding global warming. Such issues consist of the ice melting in our arctic sea being one of the biggest threats for our environment. Another issue that made me a bit scared was the Greenland ice melting which will rise up to twenty feet sea level and it will affect about half of our largest countries. Also the West Antarctic ice will start to break if further warm water consumes the ice. This will depend on the water temperature to either keep the ice cold or warm up by the heat being produced. This article gave me enough information to reconsider global warming because it will affect us in the future. Little did we know that all this was occurring with our environment. This article made me scared to know the ice can melt and our water level could rise. It may also mean we would have higher temperatures. Global warming is something to consider because it will affect us in the future or it will affect our future family.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think of major issues that could impact the way we live, however they are not really paid attention to because of our personal issues. The article makes it clear that the earth is slowly tipping over meaning that there will be dramatic life changing event that will alter our way of living. The events that will occur due to global warming are said to take foot in the next century or so. Indeed these disasters will affect individuals but it is just a matter of coping with it. This is because the article also mentions that the world has suffered other changes but that this current trend is due to humans and what they do to increase global warming. In addition it is also mentioned that humans can change the current trend by becoming more involved and active about the situation. However the current global trend will continue its course and what happens or not will be a matter of time. This article also makes me think of a great catastrophe as it mentions that it can alter species in the world. It makes me think of large extinction of a large variety of plants and animals with a number of diseases that could evolve and affect humans. In addition the article does a good job explaining what is going on and what could happen. This gives the reader a sense of preoccupation and or concern. Humans should direct their attention to this issue. All in all global warming is not good and could potentially affect the way we live.
ReplyDeleteWhat many of us do not realize is that global warming can be a bigger issue than what we think. This reading explains how there are several different ways in which global warming can affect our planet. It doesn't just affect the sea levels, but it affects the earth's climate. It can lead to floods in drought-prone areas, and leave other areas in a drought. Due to the rising temperatures, less rainfall is seen;therefore, trees will die, and will leave many species homeless and can lead to extinction in serious cases. Deforestation not only reduces biodiversity, but it can also throw off the carbon balance in our atmosphere. Also, imagine all of the people that will have to be evacuated if water levels rise 15+ feet; this is something to think about. It is said that most of this will occur during this century, yet, I feel that if we take this situation seriously, we can do our part in reducing greenhouse gases and slow down this process. Doing things such as carpooling, or riding bikes on short commutes, or using products that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons can all help in slowing this process. We need to work together and protect the planet we live in.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think that humans are having huge negative effects on the environment. I think that regardless of what your political stance is on global warming, almost all can agree that the huge amount of humans that live on earth are damaging the natural ecosystem. Almost all of the scientific studies done on the negative effects of the environment are due to humans who cut down rain forests, have industrial revolutions, and pump oil out of the ground to run equipment that damages the atmosphere even more.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I was also reminded that global warming does not affect every area of the earth in the same way. The global warming advertisements always show the melting glaciers and the rising sea levels, but what you don’t often think about is the greening of the Sahara desert. This is something that has not happened in the past several thousand years and for it to be changing in the span of one lifetime is huge. You can directly see the cause and effect.
This absorption of heat through the ocean is what causes more tropical storms. So if you think about it humans are the ones who initiate the warming, and then are hurt by the outcome. These hurricanes are the result of too much heat and pressure between the ocean and the atmosphere. Eventually this initiates a typhoon and everything that humans created that caused the storm is destroyed. I think this is an interesting and ironic chain of events that may show what we should and should not do to the environment.
I’m familiar with global warming to an extent. Meaning I learned about it in Earth Science and then put the rest of the information in the back of my mind. After reading this article, I really put everything into perspective and realized this is a serious topic. Obviously, I have noticed the changes in the weather and how much California has been affected by the drought, but I never thought about the Artic sea ice or Greenland ice melt. Not only was I shocked, but I learned so much information that is crucial for us to know. For example, due to the Greenland ice melt the sea-level could rise up 20 feet; therefore, it would affect some of our major cities here in the United States such as New York City.
ReplyDeleteThis article has been one of many that have been brought up to bring awareness of what is going on since people fail to realize that we have a great blame to these changes I feel like this has to be made aware so that we start making changes as a whole civilization not just one country. We as people on earth need to start to protect the environment at all cost we are killing ourselves by destroying nature without consideration and all we do is complain without resolving anything like when there is a drought people cry and make the biggest scene but are polluting this earth with every step they take. I also believe that not only do we have to bring awareness by reinforce change that should be mandatory even though its going to be hard we have to do it so we can have a sustainable life on this earth since we are slowly killing it and killing ourselves in the long run. We need to change the mentality of leave it to the next generation instead it should start now, not only for us or earth but all the living creature that wander this earth that will go without home then extinct if we do not protect them. They are claiming its going to be in hundreds of years, but people don’t see that we will still get some of the effects that will come from that.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think back at my earth science class I took my freshman year in college. I remember my professor talking about past natural disasters and such. He also talked about maybe future natural disasters and what could be happening in the future, like the San Andreas Fault. I remember sitting in my chair horrified and scared of what could happen in the future. My professor on the other hand, did not seem scared at all. A classmate at the time asked him why he was not scared and he replied by saying that natural disasters happen everywhere, no where is safe. That got me thinking, I was so scared about the major earthquake that could be happening that I missed out on being happy. I decided to accept that natural disasters will happen anywhere and everywhere and it is just part of life. We set up homes in locations that aren’t meant to house people naturally. I do believe however that people should be conscious of how we treat our planet. With so much people in the world I believe that we do have a huge impact on climate changes. People need to be aware that what we put out in the environment we get back in return.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think that we should be aware of the global warning issues we are facing. The melting of the Arctic’s summer ice is a threat for many people and their cities. According to the article, the melting of the Arctic’s summer ice affects Greenland by making it ice free. This type of impact on Greenland will raise sea levels by up to 20 feet which will affect half of the 10 largest cities. These cities are homes to nearly billions of people. These people will lose their homes and be left with nothing. It is important for people to be aware of the global warning issues that are happening. By being aware of the global warning issues we are facing, we will be better prepared for what is to come. There are people and cities who will be extremely affected by global warning. For example, the melting ice in Greenland will affect cities like New York. New York is a very popular city with a large population. The people living there will be affected by this global warning issue. They will lose their homes, belongings, and their city. People should be more aware of the global warning issues that are affecting the world. We need to care for our world in order for it to last longer.
ReplyDeleteTrying to leave most of my bias at the door I still feel like these articles are just scare tactics. Yes there is global climate change. Unlike this article it cannot be classified as global warming because the earth is also going through a state of global cooling. The weather just seems to be on the two extremes. The reason that I say this article is using scare tactics is because it is just throwing out numbers without referencing the studies done. Yes I realize that they say “according to references,” but this is hardly an actual case study. For me it is hard to feel emotional about cutting the Boreal forests in half when there is no documented proof. I don’t mean to sound right wing and say that there isn’t a problem but I think like all media they are just trying to rally “troops” for their support. Most of the damage that has been done to our climate and rainforest has come from large corporations, but us as individuals are to blame for these corporations doing the damage. We are responsible because we as consumers demand low prices every time. If we could limit our consumerism or spend more for every product that we buy then yes that is the best case senior, but we know realistically that this won’t ever happen. Humans always need to feel dominate to each other so the fire of consumerism will never be extinguished or tamed.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading the article of what is going on around the globe due to global warming, a few things came to mind. First off, the position that we have put ourselves and our planet earth is a very dangerous one. We are on course to destroy the planet for future generations. With all the toxins and pollution we are pumping into our atmosphere we are not going to leave much of an ozone layer, which is what controls our atmosphere. The stats and effects are plain to see. What is happening to our planet is happening right in front of us. The question is not what is happening, but rather how do we stop it and what do we have to do to reverse is if at all possible. The second thought I was having during this reading is do people really even care about what we are doing to our planet? It is painfully obvious that most people care more about what is going on in their timelines on their social media than what is going on in their home planet. I will admit that I may be one of those people at times but for the most part I do my part of taking care of Earth. I try and recycle as much as possible, I turn off lights when not in use, and I try and watch the water usage as much as possible at my home. It really is up to you and me to try and leave as small of a carbon footprint on this planet as possible for future generations to be able to enjoy it as much as we have and will.
ReplyDeleteThis article helped me realize what huge role we have over possible destruction to our own planet. This article also brought up points to how close we are to catastrophic events due to sea level increase and rainfall shortage. Even though it states that some events that possibly can cause significant damage, won't occur for hundreds of years. The article brings up points that we are currently seeing and that we need to address soon. I also think about why this isn't a much bigger issue that is brought out to the public constantly to make certain changes that can reverse these effects. When I hear 20 feet I don't really think it is that big of a deal but in reality it is and can be extremely catastrophic to big cities like New York. A lot of other places are at danger in the near future as well.
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading this article, I was quite surprised of how much change has been going on in this world, on a climate level. I am aware of global warming, but wasn’t fully aware of the close to permanent damages that have risen due to the changes in our climate. After reading this article, it made me question why people aren’t alarmed by the changes happening and whether everyone even cares about our world. Every now and then I see the “park & ride” signs around Delano, and question if people take the advantage of car pooling. Whenever I’m driving with my windows down, there is never a time where I have to roll them back up due to the carbon emissions released from semi trucks or other heavy duty vehicles. Just with one single inhale of the emissions bothers me so much. Knowing I’m able to get away from the up-close and direct exposure of it, it doesn’t mean I’m not exposed to it at all. It’s actually shocking to know that 6 of the 11 cities in the Unites States that were ranked with the worst air pollution fall within California. With that, it doesn’t surprise me that California is in a drought. I hear broadcasters and people on the street talk about how to prevent global warming, but I think we need people to make a bigger step in their habits or actions in order to protect our world from the harmful effects of global warming.
ReplyDeleteThis article makes me think that the effects of global warming are closer and so much more serious than we once thought before. It is mind boggling that likely in my life time the Arctic ice will all be melted. If this were to happen, then most penguins, seals, and polar bears would be extinct, too. It is hard to imagine a world where future generations will not know that such animals ever existed. Moreover, this article also states that there is a possibility that huge cities like New York and Boston will become flooded due to Greenland’s ice melting. People that live in these populous cities will lose their homes and have to start anew in other parts of the country. Also, all the history that makes up the cities will be lost. For example, in New York, there will no longer be the great Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harlem, the Statue of Liberty, Broadway, etc. Even if the city is not well known, its city members will be deeply affected because they will lose their jobs and community.
ReplyDeleteIf the Amazon rainforest dies off, it will deeply be a misfortune to science. Due to the Amazon’s great biodiversity and vast amount of land, there are still thousands of animal and plant species undiscovered. If the undiscovered species were to die off due to the Amazon becoming grasslands, then we would never have gotten the chance of getting to know such complex creatures. Some plants that we will never get to know and name might have the potential to become cures for fatal diseases. Also, some of the aborigines that still live in the Amazon will need to move from their homes because of how barren the land will be.
If the world doesn’t find a quick solution to combat global warming, then all the tragedies this article mentioned will become true.
After reading this article, I'm seriously scared. I've always believed in Global Warming, and I've always advocated to friends and family to take concern as well, but I didn't realize we were at the point of no return. The worst part of Global Warming is it could have been avoided. Most of my friends and family disbelieve in Global Warming. When I bring this to their attention, they usually respond, who cares how the Earth looks, and I respond, who cares if we die tomorrow. That's really how I feel. Global warming creates a domino effect on our lives. It negatively impacts every aspect of our lives, and I for one do not want to be a part of the problem. I want to be a part of the solution. If we all did our parts, then maybe we could get our planet back into good condition. Part of my personal contribution, will be to pick up strangers trash, and bugging my family until they also begin to care, or at least recycly. I don't care if they call me Captain Planet! I want our planet to be around forever. That's probably unrealistic of me, so I will settle for a really long time. I don't want to live on another planet as a result of global warming, or even for my descendants to live on another planet. How sad it would be if they never experience the smell of flowers, the feel of the ocean air, etc. Planet Earth is my home, and I love my planet.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, it gave me a different perspective about global warming. I have been aware about this situation, but I did not think it was a serious matter. This article gave some facts about what is happening and what can happen in the future. Personally I believe that this situation is scary because not a lot of people take this matter seriously, with those I include my self. After reading this article I can see the changes that have been going on in the world. For example, the article stated that “the melting of the Arctic's summer ice is considered to be the single greatest, and some scientists think we've already passed the tipping point.” I decided not to use any foam cups or plates anymore, I know it is a small change, but I hope that gradually I can do something to teach my children to take care of this planet. The article stated that some changes can take several years to show, but with the El NiƱo I think that we can all agree that it is coming upon us sooner.
